This film is a cross-disciplinary collaboration between Luis Buñuel, the father of surrealist cinema, and surrealist painter Salvador Dalí. It depicts human dreams and subconsciousness. The story is divided into two parts: in the first part, a melancholic young man (played by Luis Buñuel) sits under the moonlight, sharpening a razor while smoking, waiting for a young girl to appear. He caresses the young girl’s face with the razor, slicing open her eyeball as dark clouds pass over the moon. The second part is set eight years later, where a young man in a dress-like cloak rides a bicycle and collapses under a woman’s building. The woman comes down and takes the box from his hands, and he never awakens again. Back inside, the woman sits in contemplation as another man knocks on the door, the palms of his hands covered in ants. While the man and woman study the ants, another woman dressed in men’s clothing downstairs fiddles with a severed hand, attracting the attention of passersby. Subsequently, symbols appear on screen one after another: a woman’s breast, a pumpkin, monks, a piano, and ragged men and women, all showcasing a rich tapestry of symbolic dreams.
