The eldest sons of the Tōyama and the Shimotsuma families are at odds, and the unsuspecting Zatōichi (played by Ken Takakura) is invited by Tōyama to lend a hand. Left without a guide, Zatōichi continues on his path and rescues a young lady named Mitsu (played by Shiho Fujimura) from Edo, who is being bullied and chased by samurai. At the request of the girl's deceased grandfather, Zatōichi decides to escort Mitsu back to Edo. However, the wife of one of the three samurai, Aki (played by Reiko Fujiwara), harbors a grudge against Zatōichi and tries various methods to abduct Mitsu. Loyal and honorable, Zatōichi does everything in his power to protect Mitsu, and during this process, the two, who are from vastly different backgrounds and statuses, gradually develop feelings for each other. Realizing the disparity between him and the girl, Zatōichi restrains his emotions. As the journey nears its end, all conflicts reach a boiling point...
