Not long after, led by their chief, Duoxiangwan, the pirates rampaged, looting, burning, and killing. Inspired by Wu Shilai, the people of Songjiang began to contribute money and resources. Faced with the imminent attack on the city, Wu Shilai led the defending officials and citizens to build fortifications together and sent for reinforcements while devising strategies for when the pirates would attack the city. The next day, the pirates fiercely assaulted Songjiang, using explosives to blow up the southern wall. The pirates surged toward the city, and Wu Shilai hurriedly gathered archers to concentrate their arrows and drive the pirates back. The pirates temporarily retreated, but the arrows on the city walls were nearly depleted. In the midst of this crisis, reinforcements arrived, and under Wu Shilai’s leadership, the officials and citizens united to crush the pirates in one decisive battle.
