With defeat inevitable, Japanese officers ordered the military and civilians on the island to commit 'jewel suicide' in loyalty to the Emperor, turning the beautiful Saipan into a hell on earth, with rivers of blood. Captain Oka Hiroshi (played by Yutaka Takenoue) of the 18th Infantry Regiment led 2,000 soldiers in a suicidal attack against the American forces, resulting in a fierce melee that left both sides devastated. Oka narrowly escaped and encountered survivors from other units, including Horiuchi Masamitsu (played by Toshiyuki Nishida) and Kitani Toshio (played by Takayuki Yamada). At this moment, the belief in 'survival' took hold of Oka's heart, and he decided to protect the surviving military personnel and civilians until the war's end...
