In 1914, in a small town in Devon, a boy named Albert (played by Jeremy Irvine) witnessed the birth of a foal named Joey. At the market, it was frequently bid upon, ultimately purchased by Albert's father, Ted (played by Peter Mullan), for an exorbitant price of over 30 guineas, which caused him to offend the landlord due to his limp. Albert played joyfully with Joey and shared moments with friends. However, good times didn't last long; when the landlord visited, he stated that if Joey couldn't plow the fields, he would take it away immediately. So Ted gambled everything he had. Under pressure, Albert forced a saddle onto Joey and tried to make it plow the fields, even using a whip, but it wouldn't submit. To repay the debts, Ted personally took to plowing, and his dedication paid off with a harvest, but a heavy rain destroyed everything. When the German army invaded, Ted was forced to sell Joey to the cavalry for over 30 guineas. Although Albert found it hard to part with Joey, he tearfully bid farewell as Joey headed for a battlefield of uncertain fate. During the war, Joey had many different owners, from a British captain to an old farmer in France and his granddaughter, and then to a German cavalryman; however, what it truly awaited was Albert.
