To train this group of misfits, the Kuomintang sent two professional soldiers: Chief of Staff Fang Xianggong (played by Yuan Yuan) and Staff Officer Tan (played by Tan Zengwei), along with a communications officer Bai Jiefen (played by Gong Zhu) to maintain contact with higher-ups. Due to the chaotic composition of the troops, various disciplinary violations frequently arose, and after inspections and rectifications, there were slight improvements. With a major enemy approaching and the main forces of the Nationalist Army retreating, they ordered the new Third Regiment to stay behind and resist, with foreseeable consequences.
