This film, directed by Ding Shanxi, narrates the events of August 13, 1937, when Japanese troops invaded Shanghai. The commander of China's 524th regiment of the 88th Division, Xie Jinyuan, led 480 young officers, known as the '800 Heroes', to hold the Sihang Warehouse for three months in order to tie down the Japanese forces and cover the retreat of the Chinese army. The soldiers fought bravely against the enemy, while girl scouts risked their lives to supply food and medicine to the defenders. After the mission to hold the line was completed, the defenders retreated across the Suzhou Bridge. The film's structure and approach are completely different from 'Heroes of the Nation', focusing solely on the Sihang Warehouse, which was surrounded by hundreds of Chinese soldiers engaged in trench warfare with the encircling Japanese troops. The director, drawing on historical facts, utilized the British and French concessions surrounding the warehouse, juxtaposed with the Nationalist-controlled area across the Suzhou River, to create dramatic conflicts between war and peace, portraying the patriotic army's fearless spirit in resisting the invaders and the supportive atmosphere of the Shanghai citizens towards the Nationalist defenders. The director skillfully captured the elements of conflict, arranged various dangers, and used montage techniques to illustrate the concerns of the people for the soldiers as they crossed the Suzhou River under gunfire, creating gripping scenes that escalated the plot. This event was adapted for the screen in 1938 as a silent film, scripted by Yang Hansheng and directed by Yin Yunwei, starring Yuan Muzhi and Chen Bo'er, and was one of the more well-known 'rear-area films' during the war. It featured poignant details of girl scouts risking their lives to deliver the national flag to the heroes, evoking a profound sense of tragedy. The film created a sensation in the rear areas and Hong Kong at the time, and received enthusiastic responses even in Southeast Asia and Western Europe.
