Twenty years ago, the mighty Roman Empire sent out the Roman Ninth Legion composed of 5,000 elite soldiers, which mysteriously vanished in the Scottish Highlands. The son of the Ninth Legion's leader, Marcus (played by Channing Tatum), is brave and skilled in battle, leading troops at the front lines. After being seriously injured in a war, he is forced to recover at his uncle's home. During his recovery, Marcus rescues a slave named Esca (played by Jamie Bell) in the gladiatorial arena and takes him as a servant. Soon after, Marcus hears that a tribe in the north has discovered the eagle standard lost by his father, and determined to restore his father's honor, he sets out to the north to retrieve the standard. Marcus is accompanied by Esca, who is more familiar with the northern terrain. Along the journey, their master-servant relationship experiences various ups and downs and mutual tests. Especially when they encounter the fierce Prince of the Celts (played by Tahar Rahim), Marcus discovers that Esca is far from being just an ordinary slave. Who truly controls the eagle standard, and how did the Ninth Legion fall? The truth becomes increasingly elusive...
