Moby-Dick is celebrated alongside Faulkner's "The Bear" and Hemingway's "The Old Man and the Sea" as one of the three great animal epics in American literature. The classic story "Moby-Dick" was adapted again in 2010 into a two-part series. Being a classic work, it has been remade several times, resulting in three versions: 1956, 1988, and 2010. "Moby-Dick," originally written by Herman Melville, is one of the most important novels in 19th century American literature. In 1839, Melville went to sea to make a living, working on merchant ships, whaling boats, and naval ships, thus establishing an inseparable bond with the ocean. The story of Moby-Dick is narrated by "I"—Ishmael, who is hired to go whaling on the ship "Pequod." Captain Ahab is a cunning and seasoned sailor who, during a voyage, loses a leg to a white sperm whale; from then on, he becomes obsessed with seeking revenge on this whale named Moby-Dick. In the quest to find Moby-Dick, they catch several whales and collide with other whaling ships, experiencing various extraordinary events that can only happen at sea. Eventually, they find Moby-Dick, and Ahab strikes it with a harpoon. The enraged sperm whale then sinks the "Pequod," and Ishmael is the only sailor who survives. "Moby-Dick" is not just an exhilarating story; the author aimed to create an encyclopedic work, which he indeed accomplished. The book collects nearly all knowledge about whales at the time (which was not easy, as people then even thought whales were a type of fish!), along with detailed descriptions of the whaling profession. The magnificent and solemn image of the whale runs throughout the novel, leading one to believe that even if the great flood from the Bible were to come again and drown all humanity like mice, they would swim freely in the sea. Note: This is not the rough movie of the same name from 2010.
