The overweight, crude yet kind man Kymann (played by Gérard Depardieu) lives in a trailer next to his mother's garden. He usually tends to his vegetable garden, hangs out with friends at a small bar, and sometimes enjoys romantic moments with his young girlfriend Annette (played by Gisèle Casadesus) in their cozy space, leading a tranquil life. However, inside, he harbors unknown vulnerabilities and pains; he was conceived when his mother didn't want him and has never known his father; his teachers mocked him for his stupidity; and his buddies like him but often tease him. His girlfriend wants a child, but due to his inferiority complex, he has always hesitated to agree, leading to tension in their relationship. One day, Kymann encounters Marguerite (played by Gisèle Casadesus) in the park, where she is feeding pigeons and loudly reading chapters of a novel. A spark begins to grow in his barren mind. The knowledgeable Marguerite is a retired agronomist who has spent most of her life traveling the world and reading literary works. From then on, Kymann dedicates his afternoons to Marguerite's readings.
