Ah Hua (played by Andy Lau) has always wanted to be a good police officer. Just as he gets a great opportunity to showcase his skills, he is assigned to a team that is very demoralized and completely lacks motivation to work. Their team is often looked down upon by another team led by Cheung Yeung (played by Tony Leung). Ah Hua is very dissatisfied with Yeung's style, leading to a conflict during one of their operations. Ah Hua's mother (played by Lam Kin Ming) calls him back home because his girlfriend Alan (played by Maggie Cheung) is being pressured by her father (played by Chin Po) to marry a wealthy man with whom she has no feelings. Alan's father is also Ah Hua's mentor, putting him in a dilemma between love and duty. Moreover, Ah Hua is troubled to find out that his mother is having an affair with his colleague Qiu (played by Anthony Wong). After returning to the police station, a group of criminals attempts to break in to rescue their accomplice, but Ah Hua's achievement in capturing the criminals is thwarted by Yeung's scheme. Unable to tolerate this any longer, Ah Hua decides to face Yeung in a taekwondo match.
