Hawking (played by Eddie Redmayne) meets Jane (played by Felicity Jones) at a dance, where they hit it off during their first conversation, feeling as if they were destined to meet earlier. Unfortunately, after a fainting spell, Hawking is diagnosed with a rare form of motor neurone disease (ALS), with doctors telling him he has only two years to live. Struggling with the illness, Hawking falls into a depression, but Jane does not abandon him; instead, after many twists and turns, the two enter into marriage, and Jane gives birth to a lively and lovely child. Hawking's body quickly weakens, yet he continues to achieve remarkable accomplishments in academic research. To take care of Hawking, Jane willingly becomes the 'woman behind him,' but this also becomes the first crack in their once happy marriage.
