This film is adapted from the 1928 novel of the same name by Japanese mystery novelist Edogawa Rampo. French professor Alex Fayol (played by Benoît Magimel) is an expert on the mysterious Japanese dark detective novelist Ichiro Hirata. After achieving great success with his own detective novel published in Japan, Alex is invited to Kyoto for promotional activities. He tells the publisher Honda (played by Gen Shimaoka) that he really wants to meet Ichiro Hirata, but his efforts are in vain. At a dinner, Alex meets the famous Kyoto geisha Tamako (played by Lika Minamoto) and falls in love with her. Tamako reveals to Alex that her former lover is Ichiro Hirata. Moved by love, Alex does his best to help Tamako through her troubles, only to find himself caught in an unexpected conspiracy... This film was nominated for the Golden Lion at the 2008 Venice Film Festival.
