Wei Duanben (played by Shao Feng), a small civil servant in the Nanjing government, was forced to leave his wife Wang Yulan behind and escape with the refugees to the provisional capital Chongqing. Along the way, Wei encounters the beautiful young girl Tian Peizhi (played by Chen Hao), who is six years younger than him. Both are lost souls in despair and find solace in each other, eventually marrying. Time flies, and six or seven years pass in the blink of an eye. The Wei couple has had a pair of children. Wei Duanben works in a government agency; he is honest and earnest, yet simple and dull. He supports his small family with a meager salary. Although Tian Peizhi is a mother, she maintains her naive and lively character. Unable to endure the poverty and monotony of life, she becomes obsessed with gambling. What begins as small bets escalates into substantial stakes, leading to increasingly strained family finances and frequent arguments between the couple. Tian sinks deeper into the gambling world and, in order to raise money, befriends unscrupulous merchants and loan sharks. With the arrival of figures like Fan Baohua (played by Yu Hewen), Hong Wuye (played by Yuan Yuan), and Grandma Zhu Si (played by He Saifei), the Wei family becomes increasingly ensnared in a dark quagmire...
