Ex-soldier Li Changjiang (played by Andy Lau) is imprisoned after being implicated by two of his gang members during a robbery. After enduring severe beatings from the police officer Mao Xiangyang (played by Xu Jinjiang), he is sentenced to death. Just before his execution, Changjiang manages to escape with a saw blade given to him by his father. Changjiang finds a human smuggling group to take him to Hong Kong, where he meets Ji Xin (played by Mo Shaocong) and A Man (played by Li Meifeng), whose kindness deeply moves him. Due to his relatives in Hong Kong refusing to take him in, Changjiang has to work at a construction site for the human smuggling group's leader, Brother Liang, to pay off his debts. During this time, he hears that A Man has been sold into prostitution, and he spends day and night thinking of ways to rescue her. Changjiang finds himself in a futile struggle against a pimp gang and, with Brother Liang's introduction, helps the leader of the Hunan gang, Sha Pizhuo, to rob a jewelry store in order to use the gang's power to save A Man. Ji Xin, also working under Sha Pizhuo, nearly gets captured during the robbery, but Changjiang saves him, and the two become close friends. After the robbery, however, Changjiang finds that Sha Pizhuo has not honored his promises and instead uses A Man to coerce Changjiang into continuing his criminal activities. Meanwhile, Mao Xiangyang travels to Hong Kong specifically to capture Changjiang...
