As their romance begins, it coincides with Joseph McCarthy and Roy Cohn declaring war on 'subversives' and 'sexual deviants,' marking the start of one of the darkest periods in 20th century American history. Over a span of 40 years, Hawkins and Tim intersect in various contexts—Vietnam War protests in the 1960s, disco hedonism driven by drugs in the 1970s, and the AIDS crisis in the 1980s—while facing numerous obstacles from the world and themselves.
