The play focuses on the early and later life of Cassandra Austen (played by Keeley Hawes), revolving around a literary mystery - Cassandra is notorious for burning the letters of her sister and close friend Jane Austen (played by Patsy Ferran). The story begins in 1830, many years after Jane Austen's death, when Cassandra has to help her deceased fiancé's niece Isabella (played by Rose Leslie) keep their house, but her true purpose is to find some of Jane's letters, as she fears that if these letters fall into the wrong hands, they could ruin Jane's reputation.
