Jiao Guiying (played by Fu Quanxiang) is a famous courtesan in the capital. She has been supporting the scholar Wang Kui (played by Lu Jinhua) for a long time, and later dedicates herself to him; their relationship is very close. Two years later, Wang Kui goes to the capital to take the examination and becomes the top scholar. He catches the attention of the daughter of a noble family, and blinded by profit, Wang Kui sends a letter of divorce to Jiao Guiying, who has been waiting for him to return home. Heartbroken over this news, Jiao Guiying expresses all her grievances at the Sea God Temple and then hangs herself. The Sea God learns of Jiao Guiying's injustice, accepts her complaint, and the judge allows her ghost to confront Wang Kui in the capital. Given their past as a married couple, Jiao Guiying still has some lingering feelings, so she decides to test him. However, to her surprise, Wang Kui is ungrateful and utterly heartless. In her rage, Jiao Guiying captures Wang Kui and ensures he receives the punishment he deserves.
