The underworld assassin Ah Ping (played by Chow Yun-fat) is the owner of the Peace Hotel. It is rumored that he possesses exceptional martial arts skills and once single-handedly killed over two hundred bandits. He claims that the Peace Hotel is a "sanctuary" where no gang can provoke or stir trouble for guests, regardless of their past conflicts, but he does not guarantee their safety after they leave. The arrival of the singer Ah Man (played by Julie Yeh Feng) disrupts this underworld rule. Ah Man is being chased and escapes to the Peace Hotel. She is charming and captures Ah Ping's affection, prompting him to protect her and help her evade her pursuers. However, Ah Ping's feelings lead him into a trap that had long been laid: Ah Man is actually the bait for this trap! In his anger, Ah Ping decides to take up arms and re-enter the underworld, unleashing a bloody and violent battle.
