Young officer Xu Wenqiang (played by Leslie Cheung) is ambushed by Japanese spies while fleeing, falling into the sea. When he drifts ashore at the Bund, he collapses from exhaustion. Ding Li (played by Andy Lau), passing by, attempts to rescue him but is met with Xu's instinctive resistance, leading to a scuffle between the two that ends with them becoming friends. Ding Li inadvertently saves the daughter of Shanghai tycoon Feng Jingyao (played by Wu Xingguo), Feng Chengcheng (played by Ning Jing), and vows to marry her. However, the enchanting girl has her heart set on someone else. Feng Chengcheng regards him merely as a good friend, as she is in love with Xu Wenqiang, whom she met on a journey during a train ride. Xu Wenqiang, too, begins to have feelings for her due to her bravery, kindness, and intelligence.When Xu Wenqiang encounters Feng Chengcheng again, passion overtakes him, marking an end to his friendship with Ding Li. As Xu Wenqiang and Feng Chengcheng discuss marriage, he unexpectedly discovers that Feng Jingyao is actually the mastermind behind the pursuit of him and his colleagues. His identity is also recognized by Feng Jingyao, and the room is filled with tension.
